Mickey Mouse Ornament

I saw this adorable ornament the other day and I knew I had to try to make one for my mom. For those of you that don't know, my mom is in love with Mickey Mouse (she even has a Mickey tattoo), so I thought I would try to make this for her for Christmas.

I usually approach crafts thinking that they will be relatively easy. I'm pretty good when it comes to making things and I'm really good when it comes to replicating ideas that I have seen elsewhere.

But this ornament proved to be harder than expected. Yesterday, Joseph and I went to Hobby Lobby and bought 4 big black ornaments, 6 small clear ornaments, and red and black glitter.
The small ornaments were not spheres, but like three dimensional circles. The glass stuck out where the metal hanging attachment was and I didn't want the ears to stick off like that; it wouldn't look like Mickey. First, I tried to Break off the glass piece using this tutorial.  Needless to say, it did not work, it only cracked the ornament.

So Joseph and I tried to drill holes into the black plastic ornament. We had a lot of trouble with this and I won't go into any great detail, but here are some pictures of our attempts.

This was our first attempt at drilling a hole

Our second attempt.

And then we accidentally used a wood cutting tool, so that did not work out.

And then we decided to just burn holes in it and it proved to be very easy and effective, and it made almost perfectly round holes. I stuck the "ears" in while the plastic was still soft from the heat and then secured it with hot glue.

This was the first one I made, but I decided that the ears were way too far apart.

I drew on his pant buttons first and covered them with glitter, then I put a rubber band around the ornament to create a straights line between the red and black glitter. Then I used a paint brush to paint on Elmer's glue and then dusted it with glitter.

When the red half was finished, I removed the rubber band and used the glue bottle to paint on the "Mom" and then dusted it with silver glitter. I then painted around the word and dusted the rest with black glitter.

I also made the tail of the last "m" into a heart.

This is the almost-finished product. I still need to spray it with Aqua Net to keep the glitter in place and get red ribbon to hang it with.
I will post more pictures when it is completely finished, but for now, this is my Mickey Mouse ornament that I made for my mom.

And this is the final product! I really think she'll like it and I can't wait for her to open it!

xoxo
