DIY Chalkboard

So since this school year has started (and especially since I got my new desk!)
I have been trying to create and organize a new desk space for myself. I have seen these chalkboards around Pinterest and thought they were super cute, so I decided to make one to add to my room!

Although I did not come up with the idea myself,
I thought I would share it with everyone because of how successful my attempt was!

What you will need is:
  • Chalkboard paint (Martha Stewart has a lot or you can try making your own using these recipes!)
  • Paintbrush
  • Something to paint on!*

*I have seen everything from the glass inside an old frame to these wooden slabs,
so it's really whatever you want to make! Although, I will tell you that I tried a big canvas and it completely failed. The texture of it was way to rough for me to write on. So whatever you get, make sure it's relatively smooth!

Really, all you have to do is paint it! But I would like to give you some tips:
  • If you are buying one of the colored Martha Stewart paints, depending on how big the object you are painting is, I would recommend considering more than one bottle.
  • For the wood piece that I painted, I had to do A LOT of coats. It says a minimum of two, but in order for the texture to be as smooth as possible, I probably applied about 12.

The paint I used takes around 2 hours to dry in between each coat and 24 hours before you can mark on it.

And there you have it! A new chalkboard for your home!

**P.S. I have also seen a ton of these chicken-wired frames on Pinterest and I happened to come across this one while I was antique shopping one day! I was thrilled and now that my chalkboard is done, they will be going up on my wall very soon!

xoxo
